Towing Capability and Bed Utility
When properly configured and equipped, the GMC Sierra 1500 has a maximum available tow rating of 13,300 pounds with the Duramax diesel engine and up to 13,100 pounds with the 6.2-liter V8. Even the 5.3-liter V8 can tow 11,200 pounds, while the base turbocharged four-cylinder engine can pull up to 9,400 pounds.
The Ram 1500 falls behind in this matchup, offering a maximum available tow rating of 11,610 pounds with the twin-turbo I6, while the standard V6 tops out at just 8,130 pounds.
To support its impressive ratings, the Sierra 1500 also offers technology to help facilitate a more confident towing experience. The available ProGrade® Trailering System provides integrated tools for hitching and trailering, while up to 14 unique camera perspectives--the most in the class--can improve visibility around both the truck and a compatible trailer, including an innovative Transparent Trailer View.
The GMC Sierra also offers several cargo bed features you won't find in the Ram 1500, including 12 standard tie-downs for securing equipment and supplies. The MultiPro Tailgate is standard on all but the base trim, adding several configurations that can improve cargo access, provide a load stop, or serve as a convenient work surface. The Ram 1500 has four standard tie downs and a maximum of eight available. It also doesn't offer the same tailgate functionality as the Sierra 1500.
